Why did the part fail early? Let’s find the cause together.
Failure Analysis
When a die, tool or machine component cracks, breaks or wears out sooner than expected, the real question is why: material, heat treatment, design or operating conditions? Together with partner laboratories we coordinate the examination of the failed part and interpret the findings from a material selection and sourcing perspective.
01Scope of examination
Depending on the condition of the part and the nature of the problem, the appropriate examinations are planned:
- Visual and macroscopic examination, fracture surface evaluation (fractography)
- Chemical analysis and spectral composition check (material grade verification)
- Hardness measurement (surface and hardness profile through the section)
- Microstructure examination: grain structure, carbide distribution, decarburisation, retained austenite
- Assessment of heat-treatment-related issues (insufficient hardening, overheating, tempering errors)
- SEM/EDS analysis of crack initiation and inclusions where required
- Interpretation of findings together with design, machining and service conditions
02How we work
- 01
Information and sample
You send the failed part, drawing, material certificate, heat treatment data and operating conditions.
- 02
Preliminary assessment
Our technical team reviews the information, identifies possible causes and defines the required scope of analysis.
- 03
Laboratory examination
Analyses are carried out at partner laboratories; we coordinate the process and sample flow.
- 04
Report and recommendations
A report presents the findings, the probable root cause and recommendations regarding material, heat treatment and supply.
03Typical questions
The die cracked early
In hot work dies, thermal fatigue, insufficient tempering or incorrect grade selection are among the most frequent causes.
Learn MoreThe tool wore faster than expected
For cutting and cold work tools, carbide distribution, hardness and coating compatibility are examined.
Learn MoreDoes the material match the certificate?
Chemical analysis and hardness testing verify that the delivered material conforms to the specified grade.

From analysis to supply
Failure analysis usually ends in a material or heat treatment decision. After the report, we can define the suitable grade and delivery condition together and plan the supply.
